Lawless lawyers

THE incident that took place in the premises of the Sindh High Court, Sukkur Bench, (April 11), is most shocking and should be an eye-opener for those who believe in the law and order and continuity of democracy.

With due respect to and without casting any aspersion on the legal fraternity as a whole, the photo and the video footage that was put on air by the media was reminiscent of a pack of wolves attacking its prey ferociously.

I am certain that no member of the Bar would have been involved in this ugly and shameful act whereby a senior lawyer and former zonal in charge of an opposite party was so badly thrashed that had he not been rescued in time, his very life would have been put to danger.

Whatever the case, whether those involved in the incident were hired assassins or otherwise, a thorough and immediate investigation must be initiated by all Bar Associations, Bar Councils and also the Pakistan Bar Council in order to save the honour and dignity that this noble and highly regarded profession has.

Strong and stern action should be taken in the matter, otherwise the already tarnished image of the profession will be further discredited, as well as threaten the very blossoming of our nascent democracy.

If such elements are found to be from among the lawyers, they should be weeded out as for the last several months we have been painfully witnessing such acts to our utter dismay and dread.

No bar association would oppose such action as is meant to safeguard their members’ integrity and honour.
