IT is funny how even intellectuals and analysts in Pakistan, wittingly or unwittingly, contribute to or support the policies detrimental to the well-being of the country’s economy, its industries and its workers.

The case of urea import is the best, or one should say, the worst example of how ‘not to work for Pakistan’.

Right now we have the installed capacity to fulfil the requirements of the agriculture sector.

If we provide gas to fertiliser manufacturers, there will be no need to import even a single bag of urea.

The gas taken by fertiliser sector will affect thermal power generation.

They can use furnace oil which is expensive and can claim the difference from the government.

Remember Rs1,000 per bag or more subsidy is provided to imported urea?

The remaining difference between use of gas and furnace oil, if any, can be and should be paid by the fertiliser industry.

Thus we can save foreign exchange, provide employment to more Pakistanis and realise that such activities create a momentum and additional employment opportunities of their own.

But to feel that satisfaction, you have to be a proud Pakistani first.
