KARACHI: A sudden rain with thunder and lightning was experienced in several parts of the city on Wednesday evening and there is forecast for more.

A heavy rain also lashed Khairpur, Dadu and surrounding areas in the evening.

According to the readings taken by the meteorological office here at 11pm on Wednesday, Landhi received the heaviest downpour, measured at 28 millimetres (over an inch), in Karachi.

At Saddar, it was recorded at 5mm. At the Met Office Faisal Base observatory, it was recorded at 3mm, while it was 2.8mm at the observatory in the old city area. At the Masroor Base, it was 1mm and at the airport it was 0.4mm.

At the time of filing of this report, the Met Office had not received complete data from other parts of Sindh, but the weatherman said rain was expected in the city on Thursday, too.

In various parts of Dadu, Johi, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Mehar, Sehwan and Sann areas, downpour disrupted power supply and affected vegetable crop and harvesting of wheat crop.

Due to strong winds and rain, electricity poles and trees fell down, suspending power supply to many areas of Dadu.

Sub-divisional offer of the Sukkur Electric Power Company Syed Shahid Shah claimed that the power utility began removing fallen trees and repair of damaged electricity poles. He expressed the hope that electricity supply would be restored soon.

Dust storm and rain continued for about an hour in Khairpur city, Gambat and Kingri talukas affecting business and everyday activities.

The rain and dust storm cause suspension of power supply to various parts of Khairpur district on Wednesday evening.

The Met Office, meanwhile, forecast partly cloudy weather with chances of drizzle in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas divisions on Thursday.

In Karachi, the minimum temperature is expected to range between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius.
