Man arrested in blasphemy case

LAHORE, March 25: Shahdara Town police arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly desecrating Holy Quran in his house in Mohallah Islam Nagar on Monday.

The suspect has been booked in a case lodged by Akbar Bhatti under 295-B (Defiling, etc., of Holy Quran) of the Pakistan Penal Code.City SP (Operations) Imtiaz Serwer said the police responded to an emergency call that a man was burning pages of the Holy Book.

He said the police took accused Ghulam Hussain into custody and also recovered partially burnt Holy Quran.

The SP said the children of the suspect’s neighbour, who went to retrieve a ball from the house, noticed the incident and reported the matter to their mother who alerted the police.

The SP said the area people gathered there, but the police succeeded in controlling the situation.

Quoting the family and some area people, the SP said the suspect, a bachelor, had been living along with his father Nazar Hussain and a brother, also a bachelor.

The SP said the suspect apparently looked abnormal, but the police would interrogate him.

Quoting family and locals, another police official said that Ghulam Hussain, who is a vendor, had developed mental disorder.

ACCIDENT: A 23-year-old motorcyclist was killed while his pillion rider was injured when after their bike collided with arickshaw at Dharampura underpass on Canal Road on Monday.

Rescue 1122 said Waqas was a resident of Kot Lakhpat. The injured was admitted to Services Hospital.
