‘The pensioner’s plight’

THIS is apropos of the letter “The pensioner’s plight” (March 19) by Syed Saadat. He has touched a very sensitive yet obscure issue of governance. It will not be wrong to suggest that despite spending millions of dollars in the World Bank Project (PIFRA), the department could not address some of the very basic issues of service delivery, such as prompt processing of pensions and collection of GP funds of employees.

As a matter of fact, the accounting system of government employees is so fractured that it becomes a  Herculean task for an officer posted at different places of the country to gather his GP fund and pension contribution at one place.

I cannot agree more with the writer that the main reason for this is highhandedness by junior level bureaucrat accountants which has shackled the entire system.
