Jamaat, PTI enter seat adjustment in KP

PESHAWAR, March 17: As parleys for seat to seat adjustment gain momentum ahead of the general elections, political parties of the same shades have struck understanding to field consensus candidates on different constituencies of the National and provincial assemblies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Jamaat-i-Islami and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf have agreed on seat-to-seat adjustment in the province. This was announced here at a joint press conference after a meeting between the leaders of the two parties.

JI provincial chief Mohammad Ibrahim Khan and PTI provincial president Asad Qaiser led their teams in the talks.Addressing the press conference, Ibrahim Khan said that both the parties had decided to support each other’s candidates on the National and provincial assemblies’ seats in the province.

He said that both the parties formed six-member joint committee to work out formula for seat adjustment. The committee will complete its work by March 26.

Mr Khan said that JI and PTI had struggled jointly against military dictator Gen (retired) Pervez Musharraf from the platform of All Parties Democratic Forum. He said that PTI and JI would not cooperate with Pakistan People’s Party and Awami National Party.Talks between Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F and Pakistan Muslim League-N were also held for seat adjustment in Peshawar on Saturday night, but remained inconclusive.

Both the parties, however, agreed to continue negotiations and a six-member review committee was formed to work out formula for the next elections.

Sources said that JUI-F suggested that seats should be allotted to that party, which had won the same in the 2008 general elections.

In case none of the two parties had won that seat then it would be assigned to the runner up of that party’s candidate, it added.

However PML-N rejected the formula of JUI-F for seat adjustment. Next round of talks between the two sides would take place on Monday night.

The committee is consisted of PML-N senior vice president Khwaja Mohammad Khan Hoti, provincial secretary general Rehmat Salam Khattak and Fareed Tofan and JUI-F leader Maulana Attaur Rehman, Maulana Gul Naseeb Khan and Shamsur Rehman Shamsi.
