RAWALPINDI, April 23: Police are trying to obtain the private close-circuit television (CCTV) footages of the gun attack on four brothers in Saddar area that left one of them dead and the others injured on Monday night.

Kamran Qureshi, 30, who runs a bookshop at Haider Road in Saddar, was closing his shop and his three elder brothers were waiting outside when two masked motorbike riders pulled up and opened fire on them.

Within moments, two other gunmen appeared on the spot and also attacked the brothers.

The four injured brothers were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital where Kamran was pronounced dead. However, oneof the injured, Sajjad Qureshi, is out of danger.

Sajjad Qureshi told Dawn from his hospital bed on Tuesday that they had been in distress after the station house officer (SHO) of Morgah called and asked them on April 22 to bring their nephew Irtaza Syedain, an O-level student, to the police station forquestioning in connection with the murder of Supreme Court senior lawyer Chaudhry Mohammad Khan.

The lawyer was found shot dead in his abandoned mini-jeep near Fauji Foundation Hospital on March 28.

The injured said responding to the phone call from the SHO Morgah, he along with his three brothers twice visited the police station and tried to convince the SHO that their nephew had seen nothing related to the murder of the lawyer. But the SHOinsisted to leave the young boy with the police as they wanted to interrogate him.

He said the police were claiming that they had traced their nephew with the help of modern technology that caught signals of his cellphone in the same area where the senior lawyer was shot dead.

“The SHO was claiming that the police were investigating all those who had passed through the road at the time of the murder to reach the killer,” Sajjad said.

“Police should have come to our home or at the workplace if they wanted to question somebody in connection with any complaint. But they treated us like criminals and mentally tortured our family.”

He said after attending to the police questioning, they gathered at the bookshop. He said as he was standing near his car along with his two brothers and Kamran was closing the shop, the two motorcyclists appeared on the scene and opened fire on them.

“First one of the motorbike riders loaded his pistol and aimed it at me. Before opening fire, the gunman asked me to give up the cash. Within minutes, the gunman turned towards my elder brother Aftab Qureshi. Later, the attackers made a phone call tosomebody and within minutes another motorbike with two riders appeared,” Sajjad said.

He claimed that one of the gunmen also got himself injured during the gunfire but his accomplices took him away.

“I tried to overpower the gunmen but they were well built and managed to speed off on their unregistered motorbikes,” he added.
