Banned outfit’s activists arrested

CHAKWAL, March 4: Two members of a banned outfit have been arrested and sent to jail, the police here said on Monday.

District Police Officer Kashif Mushtaq Kanju told Dawn that Qari Asad Irfan, the district president of outlawed Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat (ASWJ), and a member of the organisation Moreed Hussain were arrested and sent to the Jhelum prison.

“In Chakwal we had only these two wanted men who have been arrested,” he added. On the other hand, the ASWJ in a statement claimed that Qari Irfan was not arrested rather he himself surrendered to the police.

The police said Moreed Hussain was involved in the Lal Masjid incident and many blasts while Qari Irfan was accused of involvement in a number of ‘untoward incidents’.

In the meantime, a head money of Rs1 million has been fixed on Sajjad Ahmad who belonged to Mona village of Chakwal.

According to the police, he was allegedly involved in the suicide attack on a mourning procession in Rawalpindi during Muharram last year.

The counter-terrorism department had asked the local police to arrest Qari Irfan and Moreed Hussain who were also placed on the fourth schedule.

“There are 59 people in the Chakwal district who are placed in the fourth schedule of the anti-terrorism law,” Inspector Raja Kaosar of CTD added.

“People placed in the fourth schedule cannot leave their home district without informing the police,” said DPO Kanju.

In another move, three clerics were booked for misusing the loudspeaker in mosques. According to the police, Abdul Sami, Mohammad Akhtar and Mohammad Arif were booked under the amplifier act after they allegedly delivered incendiary speeches from the loudspeakers of the mosques.
