Here are a few most popular New Year superstitions – but don’t you start believing in them!

Put on new clothes

It’s believed in some cultures that one should put on new clothes on a New Year’s Day. This would mean receiving more new clothes during the year.

Don’t cry

It is said that one should not cry or wail on the first day of the New Year. Crying in the beginning of a new year will bring more sorrows during the rest of the year.

New Year kids

Kids born on January 1 are believed to be the luckiest of all throughout their lives.

Let the old year out

At midnight, some people open all the doors of a house to let the old year escape without hindrance.

Stack up!

It is said that food should be stocked and purses should be kept full of money on the first day of the New Year in order to bring prosperity throughout the year.

Do not wash!

In several societies washing dishes and doing laundry on New Year’s Day is believed to lead to sorrow during the year.

Pay your debts

Pay your bills and loans before New Year Eve, so you don’t have any debt left for New Year. — Compiled by The Surfer
