Compensation sought

PESHAWAR, Dec 26: The business community of Qissa Khwani Bazaar has expressed concern over the delay in disbursement of compensation among those injured in a suicide bombing on Nov 7, 2012.

Talking to reporters at Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday, Frontier Printers and Publishers Association vice-president Jumaat Ali Shah said scores of people, including shopkeepers, were wounded in the suicide attack on former SP (investigation) Hilal Haider.

Flanked by other office-bearers of the association, he said Zafar Khattak, president of the association, and another trader Asghar Khan were also among the wounded people, who were still awaiting financial support.

He warned that the affected people would start protest demonstrations if the government didn’t fulfill its promise of compensating the affected families within 72 hours. —Bureau Report

Two with arms arrested

LAKKI MARWAT, Dec 26: Police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested two people and recovered arms and ammunition during a raid on the house of a wanted outlaw in Tattarkhel village here.

A police official said the proclaimed offender had left the house before a police party headed by SHO Mashal Khan raided it, adding two persons identified as Suhail Khan and Mohammad Raeel were arrested. An AK 47 assault rifle, a shotgun, a hand grenade and 57 bullets were seized from the house.  Police registered a case against the arrested persons under relevant sections of PPC and the explosive act and started investigation.

Meanwhile, a young man was shot dead over a petty dispute in Tarkha Bazikhel village, said police on Wednesday.

A complainant Islam Jan told Shaheed Asmatullah Khan Khattak police that Bakhmal and his brother Shakirullah shot dead his nephew Kabeer and escaped. —Correspondent

Empty shells recovered

KOHAT, Dec 26: Police seized huge quantity of empty shells being brought to Darra Adamkhel from Afghanistan for refilling here on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off that an attempt would be made to smuggle empty shells of bullets from Hangu via Kohat for refilling purpose, the police stopped a suspicious bus (KT-3105) and recovered eight sacks of empty bullets from it. The police arrested an accused, Zareef, resident of tribal Momand Agency. Refilling these shells is a roaring business of some tribesmen.

Meanwhile, the Saddar police recovered three Kalashnikovs, four pistols and three repeaters from three accused during an operation.The police registered cases against both the accused after obtaining their physical remand from the court. —Correspondent

SWA gets new tehsil

PESHAWAR, Dec 26: The government has notified Shakai area of South Waziristan Agency as a tehsil, according to a handout issued by the Civil Secretariat Fata here on Wednesday.

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Barrister Masood Kausar had announced formation of the tehsil while addressing a addressing a jirga in Wana on Dec 17. —Bureau Report

Securing flood prone areas

PESHAWAR, Dec 26: The government has allocated Rs950 million to construct protection walls and widen rainwater nullahs to secure the low lying areas of Peshawar from floods.

This was disclosed by provincial Minister for Agriculture Arbab Ayub Jan while addressing a meeting of farmers at his residence here on Wednesday.

The government wanted to secure the agriculture land and population located along the Bara River and Budheni water nullah as they had suffered a lot in the past, said the minister, according to a statement.

He informed the farmers that thanks to scientists’ strenuous efforts to introduce new breeds of crops, vegetables and fruits, the province had become self sufficient in the wheat crop for the first time in its history. He said surplus wheat would be exported to Afghanistan and Balochistan.

Similarly, he said bulldozers and tractors had been purchased to make best use of the barren land. —Bureau Report

Art competition for children

PESHAWAR, Dec 26: A one-day art competition was arranged here on Wednesday for the children of both government and private schools. Grifti Arts Competition organised the programme.

Children presented their different art works, including tableau, national songs and speeches in the competition. Students of Peshawar Public School for Girls won the first prize.

Parents and teachers attended the competition and appreciated its organiser.

Training workshop

PESHAWAR, Dec 26: The directorate of health services Fata arranged a three-day training workshop on district health information system (DHIS) with the support of Unicef.

The participants included doctors, paramedical staff and health facilities’ in-charges from North Waziristan and Bajaur Agency.

The workshop was meant to train the participants in recording, keeping and reporting in different health sectors.

Speaking on the occasion, DHIS coordinator Dr Mustaq Ahmad stressed the importance of training in recording, keeping and reporting in health sector. He said that proper policies in health sector could benefit the people.

Director health services Fata Dr Fawad Khan distributed certificates among the 25 participants at the end of the training.—APP
