Clarification

THIS is with reference to the report in Dawn metropolitan titled: “World losing one PC mangroves every year, moot told” (Nov 19).

Referring to Mr Javed Jabbar, the report states: “…a former Vice President of the IUCN and current Regional Councillor…”. One incorrect word, “current” requires clarification to correct the record.

The fact is that Javed Jabbar, who was the chief guest at the inaugural session of the International Conference on mangroves about which Dawn reported, was elected in his voluntary work capacity as one of the four Vice Presidents of IUCN and as Regional Councillor for West Asia for two consecutive four-year terms (2004-2008, 2008-2012) and completed his tenure in September 2012. The IUCN Councillors/Vice Presidents serve only for a maximum of two consecutive terms. Thus, he is not the “current Regional Councillor.”

Mr Malik Amin Aslam, former minister of state for environment, was elected Regional Councillor for West Asia, IUCN, for the 2012-2016 term in Sept 2012 at the IUCN World Conservation Congress held in Jeju, South Korea.
