An explosive clean up

These photos released today show the last bastion of the once feared Al-Qaeda-affiliated extremist group Al Shabaab. Troops of the Somali National Army (SNA) and the pro-government Ras Kimboni Brigade supported by Kenyan AMISOM forces entered the port city on October 2, following a two month operation across southern Somalia which saw the liberation of villages and centres along a distance of 120km from Afmadow to Kismayo.

Now combat engineers sweep the area for unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and dispose of some of them by exploding them safely. - Photos by Agencies
