SC rejects police report

ISLAMABAD, Sept 20: The Supreme Court has rejected as “totally baseless, fictitious, concocted and misleading” a report carried in Thursday's Dawn that quoted the Secretariat police as saying  it arrested an absconder hiding in the court's mosque after getting permission from the Registrar.

A contradiction issued by the public relations office of the apex court said: “No official approached the Registrar for arresting the absconder. It is also wrong to say that the person had taken shelter inside the mosque on the Supreme Court premises as the Court building is closed after the working hour when the staff leave.”

Timber smuggling bid

TAXILA, Sept 20: Hassanabdal Police on Thursday foiled an attempt to smuggle timber from Hazara to Hassanabdal and arrested three persons.

According to police sources, a police party led by SI Javaid Ahmed, acting on a tip-off, intercepted a pick-up on Hazara road and recovered the timber.

The occupants of the vehicle failed to produce a permit for transportation of timber. Consequently, they were arrested and a case was registered against the men identified as Zahid Gull, Qaisar Ali and Fayyaz Khan. — Correspondent

Girl kidnapped

TAXILA, Sept 20: A teenage girl was kidnapped while she was on her way to a relative’s house and was shifted to an unknown place. Raja Khan reported the matter to Taxila police who have registered a case against the abductors and started further investigations.

Meanwhile, Taxila police on Wednesday foiled an attempt to smuggle narcotics, and arrested a member of an inter-provincial gang of drug smugglers.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, the sub divisional police officer Taxila, Raja Taifour Akhter, said that acting on a tip-off, a police party led by SHO Inspector Mohammad Khan intercepted a passenger van on GT road coming from Peshawar and recovered 2-kg opium and 3,300-gram charas from hidden parts of the vehicle. —Correspondent

Supplementary examination

ISLAMABAD, Sept 20: The supplementary examination of metric under the federal board would start from September 25. The roll number slips of the candidates have been dispatched on their home addresses. If any candidate could not get roll number slip, he is required to immediately contact the board. — Online

Spelling bee competition

ISLAMABAD, Sept 20: Dawn in Education Spelling Bee competition 2012 is being held in Islamabad from September 19 to 24.

Over 700 children from 120 schools of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, AJK, Peshawar, Mardan, Chakwal, Jhelum and Abbottabad are participating in the competition in all three age groups - 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17.

Pool rounds for the 9-11 age category have been completed and regional winners have qualified for the National Championship round of spelling bee 2012.

The details of the winners of 9-11 age category and their schools, who shall be participating in the National Championship of Dawn In Education Spelling Bee Competition Islamabad 2012 are as follows:

9-11: Regional Champion of 9-11 is Jazim Nadeem from EMS High School Islamabad 1st Runners up is Amal Nadeem Kazi From Modernage Public School Abbotabad 2nd Runners up is Aarib Javaid from EMS High School Islamabad.
