Key water supply plan okayed

KARACHI, Aug 15: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has been given the final approval for 260 million gallon per day (MGD) of water for Karachi through the K-IV water supply scheme.

This was announced during a meeting chaired by Planning Commission deputy chairman Nadeemul Haq in Islamabad on Wednesday, according to a KWSB press release issued on Wednesday.

Speaking about the scheme, KWSB managing director Misbahuddin Farid said that the irrigation department of Sindh had already approved the provision of 600 cusecs (260 MGD) of additional supply of water from the Indus River for Karachi.

“The citizens of Karachi as part of the first stage of the K-IV scheme will be provided an additional 260MGD water which will thereafter be increased gradually.”

The K-IV scheme is so far the biggest water supply project as all the previously completed projects of the KWSB were not of more than 100MGD.

The managing director expressed the hope that the funds for the scheme would also be released on time so that the work on it was completed within the next four years.

He said that the project would not only help the KWSB overcome the water shortage in the city, but it would also help in the industrial growth of Karachi.—Staff Reporter
