Dentist sent to jail over escape of militants

PESHAWAR, July 28: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday sent a dentist to prison over connivance with two undertrial militants for their escape.

Peshawar Central Prison dentist Mohammad Iftikhar had referred the two from Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, Dara Adamkhel group, Nadeem Abbas and Zakeem Shah, to Khyber College of Dentistry (KCD) on August 12, 2011.

They escaped from the custody after their accomplices fired gunshots at police guards escorting them to KCD.

Three guards died, while the fourth, Ilyas Khan, survived the attack. He was later on arrested on suspicion.

An official source said in an inquiry conducted by the provincial government, the said dentist was found guilty of connivance with militants.

The dentist had field a pre-arrest bail petition with anti-terrorism court judge Ibrahim Khan but withdrew it two days ago. He was later taken into custody by police.

The dentist was remanded in custody for a single day and produced before the court on completion of the period on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the court remanded into custody two suspected kidnappers of a minor girl.

Hamduallah and Inamullah were arrested a day ago by local police when they raided a house in Regi area and recovered the four-year-old girl, Faiza.

They were charged under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act and Section 365-A of Pakistan Penal Code.

An FIR was registered by Yakatoth police station on the complaint of Ibadullah, who said his minor niece was kidnapped by unidentified people, who demanded Rs10 million ransom for her release.

The suspects were produced before the court by the local police who requested that they needed their physical custody for further interrogation in the case. The officials said the arrested men belonged to a gang of kidnappers and other members of the gang could be traced by further investigation.

The court allowed three days of their physical custody to police with the direction that they be produced before it after three days.
