ISLAMABAD, July 23: The three-member joint investigation team (JIT) has not yet found any proof against former director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Fayyaz Leghari, for providing false evidence about the dual nationality of a legislator to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, sources close to the investigation said.

Mr Leghari has now been appointed as the inspector general of the Sindh police.

The sources said efforts were in progress to arrest two other officials – an additional director and a computer operator of the FIA – if their interim bails granted by the city’s lower courts are withdrawn on July 24 and 30, respectively.

A weekly report being submitted to the apex court stated that the false evidence filed with the apex court had neither been examined by the former FIA chief nor shared with him before being handed over to Advocate Anjum Waheed, who submitted the details to the court against Tariq Mehmood Alloana, an MPA from Mandi Bahauddin, claiming that he held dual nationality of Pakistan and the US.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (operation) Tahir Alam Khan, when contacted, said during investigation it was revealed that Advocate Waheed had met the DG FIA and sought the details of a passport whose number the lawyer possessed.

The FIA chief forwarded the passport number to the integrated border management system (IBMS), he said, adding details against the number were retrieved but instead of being shared with or sent to the DG office, they were given to the advocate.

The documents were signed by the assistant director (operation) of IBMS, as the IBMS’ deputy director was on leave that day, the sources added.

He said the advocate did not mention in his application that the details would be submitted to the SC. However, the sources said, the details given to the lawyer were marked as “SC query.”  The sources also said neither the FIA official, who signed thedetails, nor the advocate verified the details from the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).

The sources said the report submitted to the apex court stated that the AD and the computer operator were found guilty of submitting the false evidence to the SC. They would be arrested if the court withdraws the bails granted to them.

It may be recalled that on July 4, the SC ordered its additional registrar to lodge a criminal complaint against the then FIA chief and other officers for providing misleading information to the court showing the MPA as a dual nationality holder.

In response, the Secretariat police registered a case against the FIA officials on charges of PPCs 192 (Fabricating false evidence), 193 (punishment for false evidence) and 197 (issuing or signing false certificate).
