CID DSP wounded in attack

KARACHI, July 21: Another officer of the CID and his guard were wounded when their car was ambushed in Patel Para on Saturday, police said.

They said DSP Israr Awan was going to work in his car (SP-3306) driven by his driver Muhammad Saeed.

When the vehicle reached Patel Para, four men on two motorbikes sprayed his car with bullets as it slowed down over a speed bump.

“The firing left DSP Awan and his guard Israr Pathan wounded. They were shifted to the Civil Hospital for treatment,” said an official at the Jamshed Quarters police station. “The guard sustained six bullet wounds and the DSP was hit by two bullets. The police found empty bullet casings of 9mm pistol from the crime scene.”

Investigators said they believed the attack was linked with a similar assault on the life of the DSP in 2004.

They said a banned organisation in 2004 claimed the responsibility for that attack.

CID SP Mazhar Mashwani said: “He lived in Patel Para and came under attack minutes after he left for office. In 2004 a militant outfit attacked him apparently because of his proactive role in the arrest of its members in Karachi. It’s too early to say something about the recent attack, but one can’t rule out the same motive for the fresh incident.”
