LAHORE, July 16: The National Accountability Bureau Punjab distributed on Monday Rs46.3 million among those affected by Double Shah, United Brokerage Consultant, PUCIT and GEPCO scams.

NAB acting Director General (Prevention) Shamsher Ali distributed the cheques among the victims at a ceremony held at the bureau office.

Cheques worth Rs29.2 million were distributed among 192 victims of Sibtul Hassan Gilani alias Double Shah having less than Rs100,000 claim amount. Gilani has been convicted by the accountability court and handed down 14-year rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs5.43 billion, besides confiscation of all properties.

The NAB said it had established a special claim verification cell to speed up the recovery and disbursement of payments to the victims of Double Shah scam. In another case, a cheque of Rs2.7 million was handed over to Punjab University administration.The amount was recovered from Dr Majid Naeem, the former principal of the Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT).

Earlier, a reference was filed in an accountability court against Dr Naeem over allegations of misappropriation of government funds.

A cheque of Rs700,000 was handed over to victim after recovery of the amount from Abdul Hafeez Nagi, a former superintending engineer of GEPCO. The amount was recovered from the accused through voluntary return scheme.

The NAB also handed over cheques of Rs13.7 million to the victims of of M/s United Brokerage Consultant Pvt Ltd scam. A reference was filed against five directors of the company. The accused - Muhammad Asad Kamran, Majid Saleem and Muhammad Anjum Latif - opted for plea bargain, depositing Rs15,092,427 -- their whole liability. The trial against the other two accused was in progress, the NAB said.
