Policemen booked for spoiling transvestite gathering

GUJRANWALA, June 30: Transvestites on Saturday demonstrated on GT Road and outside the office of the city police officer as a protest against Dhulley police, which allegedly manhandled them and snatched cash and gold ornaments from them.

The protesters roughed up an assistant sub-inspector who was involved in the incident and called for an action against him.

It is said that transvestites were celebrating birthday of their guru in the Dhulley locality when ASI Riaz Ahmad and two other policemen went there in civvies and spoiled their event.

The protesters alleged that policemen snatched Rs150,000 and gold ornaments from them. They dispersed when the police sent ASI Riaz behind the bars after registration of a case against him and his two colleagues.

Model Town DSP Abdul Qayyum Gondal said the ASI and his colleagues had been booked under Section 506/155C of the Pakistan Penal Code.

YDA STRIKE: The Young Doctors Association (YDA) on Saturday continued its strike for a service structure.

YDA President Dr Kashif Bilal said the government should not take any unwise steps and solve the issue through dialogue instead.

Also, the DHQ administration issued show cause notices to seven doctors for absence from duty.

The medical superintendent said more doctors would be served show cause notices within next two days if they don’t join the duty.

IMMOLATION: A woman suffered burn injuries when she tried to immolate herself over a domestic issue in Farid Town on Saturday.

Shamaila, 30, a mother of one, quarrelled with her husband, Amanat, over a domestic issue and set herself ablaze.

She was taken to DHQ Hospital from where she was shifted to Mayo Hospital, Lahore, due to her critical condition.

ARRESTED: The Federal Investigation Agency claimed on Saturday to have arrested 42 people from Islamabad airport who were deported by Greece and Turkey and brought them back to Gujranwala for investigation.

The agency also claimed to have nabbed three human smugglers, including a proclaimed offender, in a raid and seized 12 passports and other documents from them.
