Woman dies in road accident

ISLAMABAD, June 19: A woman was killed after being hit by a vehicle of naval chief’s motorcade on the Expressway on Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place when the naval chief was heading towards Benazir International Airport. When the motorcade reached Khanna Bridge a woman appeared on the road all of a sudden. She was hit by one of the vehicles in the motorcade.

Soon people gathered on the road and blocked it. They also intercepted the last vehicle in the motorcade and snatched its key from the driver. The police were informed and till their arrival the woman remained lying on the road and the vehicle in the custody of the people.

After reaching the scene the police defused the situation and shifted the woman to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Moharar Shahzad Town police station Akhtar Abbas told Dawn that the vehicle was brought to the police station and later handed over to its driver on personal surety, adding that an official vehicle could not be impounded.

The victim, who is yet to be identified, appeared to be in her mid 30s. — Staff Reporter

Two drown

ISLAMABAD, June 19: Two persons drowned in Rawal Dam on Tuesday.

Mohammad Shayan 21, and Zouq Aftab, 20, had come to Rawal Dam and went into the water. While swimming, they ventured into the deep waters where they drowned. People informed the guards and police about the incident who reached the spot and fished out the bodies. — Staff Reporter

Outlaw arrested

TAXILA, June 19: Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested an outlaw wanted in robbery and attack on police party.

Sub divisional police officer (SDO) Raja Taifour Akhter told media persons here on Tuesday that the accused Qaseer Adeel was arrested along with his accomplices when he was fleecing after committing robbery in a house in the area in November 2011.

The SDO said his friends were held by police but he was escaped taking advantage of the dark during cross fire. He said that the accused went underground since then and was declared proclaimed offender by a local court. — Correspondent

Protest in AIOU

ISLAMABAD, June 19: Employees of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) protested on Tuesday against the termination of five regular and 22 daily wagers.

On the other hand the AIOU vice chancellor has set up a five-member committee to negotiate with the protesting workers. According to sources, the employees of the university have been demanding reinstatement of 27 employees who were terminated on different charges during the last two years.

Campaign against the VC was started after a recent dismissal of clerk Bilawal Laghari.

The committee has been given the task to immediately enter into negotiation with the agitating workers to restore complete peace in the university. The committee will look into the causes which resulted into the unruly incident took place outside the VC’s office.

Professor of AIOU Dr Ajmal said that because of protest students of the university could not enter the campus on Tuesday. Besides, some foreign delegations also had to go back as it was not possible to call them in the campus. He said the employees forcibly entered the office of the VC. — A Reporter

PMDC to probe Fauzia’s death

ISLAMABAD, June 19: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has decided to investigate the alleged negligence into the death of Fauzia Wahab, a central leader of Pakistan People’s Party.

Besides registering medical colleges, the PMDC gives licence to doctors to do medical practice. It also holds inquiries into alleged medical negligence by the doctors.

Late Ms Wahab had been admitted to a local hospital in Karachi and had undergone gallbladder surgery. But her condition deteriorated on June 16 and she died the next day.

According to media reports, after successive surgeries, she developed complications. The official said PMDC had asked the hospital concerned to submit the relevant medical record of late Fauzia Wahab.

“The PMDC assures that all medical reports would be properly checked and the alleged medical negligence would be investigated by a penal of country’s leading doctors,” the official quoted a member of the PMDC as saying. — Staff Reporter
