Mortars hit FR Kohat

KOHAT, June 13: Militants fired nine mortars at Jawaki area of the frontier region of Kohat on Wednesday.

The mortars fell in populated areas but caused no harm as they exploded in open spaces, officials said.

The security forces had earlier held a medical camp in Jawaki where 3,000 patients were provide3d free check-up and medicines. —Correspondent

CJ on missing persons

KOHAT, June 13: Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan has said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the only province where record number of missing persons had been recovered.

The chief justice was speaking at a function in district courts here on Wednesday. He stressed that law was equal for everybody and the main purpose of judiciary was to provide justice to the people at their doorstep.

He said that 100 kanals of land had been hired for the construction of judicial complex and two more judges would be provided to Kohat to ease the burden on the judges. He also promised to take up the issue of establishing high court Kohat bench for the convenience of litigants. —Correspondent

Suicide jacket recovered

MARDAN, June 13: Police claimed to have recovered a suicide jacket and explosives during a raid on an unoccupied house in Gujrat area here on Wednesday.

Niaz Khan, station house officer of the Chora police station, told journalists that police took the action on a tip-off that explosive materials were kept in an empty house owned by Yousaf Khan. He said that police recovered a suicide jacket,explosives weighing 10kg, ball bearing weighing one and a half kilogram, five detonators and fuses.

The SHO said that the bomb disposal squad was called to the site which defused the explosives. He added that a case was registered against two alleged militant brothers, Sher Alam and Farooq Alam, who were wanted to police in terrorism activities. —Correspondent

Eight students hurt

PESHAWAR, June13: Eight students of Government Higher Secondary School Akbarpura were injured when a part of the ceiling fell on them here on Wednesday.

The students were rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital. A source in the hospital said that the students had sustained injuries but were stable.

A police official of Akbarpura police station said that the students of class 6 were studying in the classroom when a portion of the ceiling fell on them. The teacher, however, remained unhurt. —Bureau Report

Squash courts at UoP

PESHAWAR, June 13: The provincial ministry of sports has provided four glass walls and the required woodwork worth Rs20 million for setting up squash courts at the University of Peshawar Sports Complex.

A press release issued here on Wednesday said that the imported glass walls have been supplied for installation of three squash courts with one having state-of-the-art facilities for holding national and international matches and two practice courts.

President Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Squash Association Qamar Zaman visited the UoP sports complex on Wednesday to provide technical assistance for installation of the glass walls in the Hakim Abdul Jalil Sports Complex being constructed at the Directorate of Sports University of Peshawar. —Bureau Report

Hashish seized

PESHAWAR, June 13: Police have seized 189kg hashish at two different places and arrested the accused here on Wednesday.

A police spokesman said that a truck was taken into custody at Badezai village of Nasir Bagh area and 100kg hashish was recovered. The police also arrested accused Qaiser of Dag Besood area of Pabbi.

In another action, Regi Lalma police took into custody a car and recovered 11kg hashish and 7kg opium from its secret cavities. Accused Murad Ali and a woman were arrested.

Similarly, in another action police took into custody another car at Northern Bypass in the limits of Chamkani police station and recovered 78kg hashish. The accused, however, managed to escape. —Bureau Report

Anti-polio campaign

GHALANAI, June 13: Local ulema have urged the tribesmen to lend their support to the health teams during upcoming polio campaign to ensure eradication of the disease from Mohmand Agency.

Speaking at a briefing at Mohmand Press Club here on Wednesday, Maulana Abdul Manan, member of core committee NRDF, and others said that the people could play a positive role in ensuring that the children under five years of age areimmunised against polio in the area.

They said that there were four confirmed cases in the agency in 2011 but no case had been reported in 2012 so far. They urged the parents to ensure that their children are administered polio drops to save them from the crippling disease.—Correspondent

Students get rescue training

PESHAWAR, June 13: The Rescue 1122 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa imparted three days training to the students of a homoeopathic college so that they could save lives in case of any emergency.

A spokesman of the Rescue Services 1122 said here on Wednesday that 36 student of Frontier Homoeopathic Collage Peshawar took part in the training.

Dr Shamsul Haq, director general, Rescue 1122, while speaking on the occasion said that the Rescue 1122, community training wing under the supervision of emergency officer community training Dr Shoaib was actively involved incommunity training of different organisations for basic life support, fire safety and role of community in case of disasters and emergencies. At the end of the ceremony, The DG Rescue 1122 distributed training certificates among the students.—Bureau Report

FIR against journalists

SWABI, June 13: The District Union of Journalists (DUJ) held a protest camp outside the office of district police officer here on Wednesday demanding withdrawal of an FIR lodged against two local journalists.

Local leaders of various political parties including PML-N, PTI, Swabi Qaumi Mahaz and Jamaat-i-Islami visited the protest camp and urged the journalists that the issue should be resolved through talks.

The case was registered in the city police station of Topi tehsil on the complaint of cable operators after protesters damaged cable links to stop its communication in the area. Two local journalists were also nominated in the case.

Meanwhile, DCO Mohammad Shah contacted the journalists and urged them to end the protest and hold talks with the district administration to resolve the issue. —Correspondent
