‘Majaaz on Wall Street’
I WAS delighted on reading Jawed Naqvi’s article ‘Majaaz on Wall Street’ (May 24). The columnist mentions Ghalib, Goswami Tulsidas, Kabir, Jawed Akhtar and Majaaz. Especially, I loved going through Jawed’s translation of Majaaz’s 1938 poem on capitalism called “Sarmayadari”, as it was so informative.
However, I don’t agree with Mr Naqvi’s first sentence in which he says, “Ghalib was possibly the greatest Urdu poet India ever produced”. Instead of this it would be good enough if the word subcontinent was used in place of India because there wasn’t any concept of a separate land in the era of the great Ghalib.
