Prices of milk, yogurt soar

TAXILA, May 19: The prices of unpacked milk and yogurt have been increased by Rs5 and Rs10 respectively in the city and cantonment areas.

The authorities concerned especially price control committees of Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) and Cantonment Board are just the idle spectators.

During a survey conducted by this reporter on Saturday, it has been observed that the milk and yogurt consumption increases manifold in the summer season.

Earlier, the unpacked milk was being sold at Rs60 to 65 per kilogram and yogurt at Rs65 to Rs70 but now the rates have been increased by Rs5 to Rs10 in the city and cantonment markets of Taxila.

It has also been observed that the milkmen without getting approval from the authorities concerned have started selling milk at their shops on increased rates.

Some milkmen, who claim that they sell only pure milk, are also fleecing the people by charging exorbitant rates.

It is pertinent to mention here that there is no proper price control system in the city as well as in cantonment areas as the milkman like suppliers of other commodities particularly of daily use items have been given a free-hand and the departments concerned are taking no appropriate action in accordance with the law. — Correspondent
