Special anti-polio drive

PESHAWAR, May 18: The district administration will launch an eight-day anti-polio drive from May 23 in the high risk union councils of the Peshawar district.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by DCO Peshawar Siraj Ahmed Khan here on Friday. The officials and representatives of different departments, health institutions, including WHO, NRDF attended the meeting and gave suggestions for making the drive a success.

In the first phase, the drive would continue from May 23 to 25 and with an interval of two days the drive would be re-launched from May 28 to 30 in the 40 high risk union councils.

Meanwhile, a quiz competition about the importance of anti-polio vaccination was held wherein students from different school participated. —Bureau Report  

Computers stolen from bank

KARAK, May 18: Robbers broke into a bank branch at Khurram Muhammadzai here on the night between Thursday and Friday and took away computers and other accessories.

Police said the robbers broke the windows of the bank and took away computers and other accessories.

The thieves tried their best to break open the strong room to get the cash but remained unsuccessful. Bank officials registeredFIR in Khurram police station of the incident.

People of the area led by former councillor Rafiullah Khattak staged a sit-in outside the Khurram police station to protest against the robbery incident.

Meanwhile, five persons sustained critical injuries in two road incidents on Friday. Two persons were wounded in a collision between a car and a motorcycle in Teri area. They were referred to Kohat in critical condition.

In second incident, three persons sustained injuries when a motorcycle met an accident at Isak Khumari. —Correspondent  

Embankment completed

UPPER DIR, May 18: A project for construction of embankment along the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University in Sheringal has been completed in six months at a cost of over Rs17 million.

The project sponsored by the government of Czech Republic was undertaken by International Organisation for Migration (IMO).

The embankment will protect the university from floods as it is situated on the bank of River Kohistan. The devastating 2010 floods had destroyed a portion of the university, creating problems for faculty and students.

The floods had washed away the forestry department, the guest house and a residential block along with 10 acres of land, causing damages estimated at Rs140 million. This project was part of the reconstruction plan of the university. The length of the embankment is 2,750 feet.

ANP new office-bearers

PESHAWAR, May 18: The Awami National Party has announced names of the newly elected office-bearers for Peshawar.

Zahid Hussain Khan was elected president and Mohammad Saeed Zahid advocate general secretary for PK-4, Peshawar unopposed, according to a statement issued here on Friday.

The election meeting was held at the city district office of the ANP on Friday where former nazim of Landi Arbab Zahid Hussain Khan and other office-bearers were elected unopposed. Gohar Saleem advocate was elected senior vice president of PK-4.

The newly elected president vowed to further strengthen the ANP in PK-4 and all over Peshawar. He added that ANP would again sweep the coming local bodies elections as well as the general elections. —Bureau Report

Museum Day observed

MARDAN, May 18: A large number of educationists, literary figures, civil society members and students thronged a function held in connection with the International Museum Day at the Department of Archaeology and Ethnology of Abdul Wali KhanUniversity here on Friday.

The acting vice-chancellor of Abdul Wali Khan University Dr Saeed Anwar attended the function as the chief guest. He also visited the museum hall of the university.

The museum was also visited by students, faculty members and general public who were overwhelmed seeing the ethnological and archaeological collection and enjoyed watching documentaries on the cultural heritage of the country, particularly the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This year, the Museum Day is being celebrated under the theme: “Museums in a changing world, new challenges, and new inspirations”.
