Girl burns herself

ISLAMABAD, May 18: A girl committed self-immolation in the capital’s rural area early Friday.

Police said Kinza Younus, 19, was brought to hospital at Pakistan Town with 100 per cent burns and died after being given emergency treatment.

The police quoted the parents of the victim as saying that they woke up at around 4am after hearing the screams of their daughter in the kitchen. They extinguished the fire and shifted her to hospital.

The family said she had been suffering from mental disturbance for the last a couple of years. — Staff Reporter

Two killed on road

FATEHJANG, May 18: Two persons were killed in separate road accidents on Friday.

According to police, a motorcyclist Jahangir Khan, coming from Rawalpindi, collided with a tractor trolley near Hattar and died on the spot. The driver of the trolley managed to escape.

In another accident in Gali Jagir, a van hit Abid Ali while he was crossing road and died on the spot. The driver of the van managed to escape. — Correspondent

Woman commits suicide

RAWALPINDI, May 18: The wife of a doctor killed herself by hanging with her headscarf tied to the ceiling fan at her house in Bakra Mandi area on Friday night, police said.

Anila Zafar, 22, who married Dr Sadaqat Hussain Shah some eleven months ago, had been studying at a university in Islamabad.

Police said she exchanged harsh words with her husband over a petty issue before she went into her room and committed suicide. — Staff Reporter

280kg charas seized

TAXILA, May 18: National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) confiscated huge quantity of drugs on Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1) and arrested a member of inter-provincial gang on Friday.

Briefing the newsmen in Hassanabdal, Sector Commander (M-1) SSP Asim Gulzar said acting on a tip off, the NHMP patrolling staff foiled the attempt to smuggle 280 kg of charas from Peshawar to Islamabad which was hidden in secret parts of a car (IDD-1518) near Taxila.

While giving details, the SSP said Inspector Fayyaz Sarwar along with Sub-inspector Asif Khattak tried to stop the vehicle butthe driver sped away.

He lost control over the vehicle, hit a Mazda (FDW-1133) and stopped.

The NHMP officers, on approach, searched the vehicle and recovered 280 packets of charas (weighing one kg each). They also provided first aid to the injured smuggler at the spot and later arrested him.

He said the narcotics smuggler, identified as A.R. was a resident of Namak Mandi Peshawar. — Correspondent

Police crackdown

TAXILA, May 18: During a crackdown, Hassanabdal police arrested six outlaws and allegedly recovered weapons, bottles of liquor and drugs from their possession. The crackdown was conducted by the newly-appointed ASP Shahzad Nadeem.

According to police sources, during the midnight raid, the special police team led by the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), ASP Shahzad Nadeem, recovered liquor from A.K., I.C., T.A. and S.A.

While drugs were recovered from M.N. and illegal weapons were recovered from J.K.

Meanwhile Wah Cantonment police arrested S.U. and recovered 295 rounds of 30-bore pistol from his possession.  Police have registered separate cases. — Correspondent

Murder accused brought back

RAWALPINDI, May 18: A Pakistani citizen wanted in a murder case in the country was deported from Qatar on Thursday, a source said.

Akbar Khan, a resident of Bannu, was wanted by the local police in a murder case and red notices had been issued for his arrest through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The Interpol arrested the accused in Qatar and deported him to Islamabad. On reaching at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport in a Qatar Airways flight, the accused was handed over to the police concerned. — Staff Reporter

Thar coal project

TAXILA, May 18: Shabab-i-Milli President Taxila chapter Attiqueur Rehman Kashmiri here alleged that vested interests have started targeting Thar coal project after burying Kalabagh dam project to bleed the country dry.
