‘The path of isolation’

THIS is regarding Asma Jehangir’s article ‘The path of isolation’ (April 24) in which she advocates that elections should be held every four years instead of after every five years. A letter of mine titled ‘Tenure of government’ was also published in these columns in December 1996.

I wrote that the tenure of an elected government should be reduced from five years to four years. However, after a period of three years of governance, a referendum should be held to determine whether the government should be allowed to complete its tenure to four years based on its performance.

If performance is found unsatisfactory, it should then be asked to step down and reelections should be held as soon as possible to elect a new government. Also there should be a provision in the constitution whereby not more than two chances should be given to members of the National Assembly and a provincial assembly.
