‘Bandit’ killed in shootout with police

KARACHI, May 1: A suspected bandit was killed in a shootout with police near I.I. Chundrigar Road on Tuesday, officials said.

They said the armed men riding a motorbike were fleeing the scene after snatching cash from the cashier of a petrol pump located on I.I. Chundrigar Road when they were spotted by policemen patrolling the area on their two-wheeler.

“The policemen chased the suspects, signaled them to stop,” said an official at the Mithadar police station, adding: “The suspects, however, fired at the constables, who returned the fire and a bullet hit one of them. The injured suspect fell down while his companion managed to drive away.” The official said that the injured suspect was shifted to the Civil Hospital where died during treatment.

The police said they seized a TT pistol and Rs7,000 booty from the deceased suspect. “The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification after medico legal formalities,” he added.

‘Muggers’ kill man

A man was shot dead by while resisting a mugging attempt by two armed suspects in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Tuesday, police said.

They said that 45-year-old Ali Asghar was traveling with his employer in a car when two armed men riding a motorbike intercepted the vehicle near Block 16. The victim posed resistance after the suspects snatched their cash, cellphones and other belongings.

“During the scuffle, one of the suspects opened fire and two bullets hit the victim in the upper torso,” said Inspector Tahir Ayub, the SHO of the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station. “He succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to a nearby hospital. The victim was a resident of Pahelwan Goth area and used to travel to his workplace along with his employer.”
