Constable kills PSF activist in Gulshan

KARACHI, April 25: A police constable deputed outside a departmental store in Gulshan-i-Iqbal shot dead a student activist and wounded his friend following an altercation on Wednesday, police said.

They said that the incident occurred within the remit of the PIB Colony police station near Hasan Square where Asmat Ali, 25, and his associate Faisal had an altercation with Constable Mirza Haseen Baig upon which the latter opened fire on them.

Asmat Ali died from bullet wounds. Following the incident, activists of the People’s Students Federation took the body to the DIG-East office and staged a sit-in there. The DIG came out of his office and assured the protesters that the police constable concerned would be taken to task. Following the assurance, the students dispersed peacefully.

The police registered a case (FIR 107/2012) under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code against the police constable on a complaint of a PSF leader. The police constable was also arrested.

The police said that the victim was a BBA student at the Federal Urdu University and originally hailed from Swat and lived in Micasa Apartments.

However, a senior police officer, requesting anonymity, told Dawn that it was actually a case of extortion and the youth had allegedly gone to the store to seek money.

Young man shot dead A young man was shot dead and another wounded on Manghopir Road on Wednesday.

Police said that the incident took place within the remit of the Pirabad police station where two armed men riding a motorcycle came at the Latif communication shop located close to a hydrant. They opened fire wounding Qasim Khan Mehsud and Muhammad Khalid and rode away.

They said that Qasim was a property dealer and Khalid was a customer who visited the shop to get credit for his cellphone.

Both the men were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Qasim was pronounced dead on arrival while Khalid was admitted for treatment.

The police said that Qasim hailded form Waziristan and his brother was killed in a similar manner a few months ago in the same area.

Body found The body of an unidentified young man was found within the remit of the Pak Colony police station on Wednesday.

Police said that the body was found near the Love Lane Bridge and it appeared that it had lain there for at least three or four days.

The victim was clad in shalwar-kameez and had been shot in the head.

The police shifted the body to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Later, it was moved to the Edhi morgue for a want of identification, the police said.
