MQM activist among two shot dead in Orangi

KARACHI, April 19: At least two people were killed and five others wounded in separate incidents of firing in Orangi Town on Thursday, police said.

The violence in the area was apparently sparked off by an attack at an automobile denting-painting shop in Gulfamabad in Sector 1-D in which an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, 38-year-old Naeem Aleem, was shot dead, the area’s sub-divisional police officer Tariq Malik said.

The gunmen said to be riding a motorcycle opened fire and wounded Naeem and his associate Ahsan Hafeez the police said.

The suspects managed to escape following the incident.

The victims were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Naeem was pronounced dead on arrival while Ahsan was admitted for treatment.

The police said that shortly after the incident, a young man was shot dead by gunmen near Metro Cinema.

The 22-year-old victim, Mohammed Amin, was passing through the area when gunmen riding a motorcycle targeted him, the police added.

The victim was taken to the Qatar hospital, where he died during treatment. In yet another incident, at least three people were wounded when gunmen resorted to firing near the Qadhafi traffic intersection in Orangi Town, the police said.

Incidents of sporadic gunfire were reported from different parts of Orangi till Thursday night.

Following the incidents, more police were sent to sensitive parts of Orangi Town, the police said.

Chemist killed in New Karachi

In a New Karachi area, a chemist at a homeopathic medicine shop was shot dead by gunmen on Thursday night, police said.

A duty officer at the Bilal Colony police station said that 48-year-old Ajaz Husain Shah was standing outside his shop in Sector 5-E, where two suspects riding a motorcycle came and opened fire on him.

The victim was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he died during treatment, the police said.

The police said that the victim didn’t have any political affiliation, nor was he active in any religious party.

The police suspected personal enmity behind the killing.
