KARACHI, April 1: A young man said to be an activist of the Awami National Party was shot dead in an Orangi Town area in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

They said that 30-year-old Amirullah Khan was targeted near the Badar traffic intersection by gunmen riding a motorcycle.

The victim was a resident of Frontier Colony and at the time of the incident he was returning from Saeedabad after attending a wedding party, the police quoted the family sources as saying.

Following the incident, the body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

A spokesman for the Awami National Party claimed that Amirullah was their party activist.

Following the killing, tension gripped Frontier Colony.

The victim’s funeral prayers held in Frontier Colony in Orangi Town in the afternoon were attended by a large number of people, including local ANP leaders.

Pushcart peddler shot dead

A young man who was asleep on the roof of his house was shot dead in a New Karachi area in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

Mohammed Akmal was shot dead during his sleep in a small house located in Sector F near the Sindhi Hotel within the remit of the Bilal Colony police station.

He lived with his cousins, the police added.

Gulberg division SP Tanvir Odho said that Akmal used to sell dried fruits on a pushcart.

In the early hours of Sunday he was asleep on the roof when his relatives heard a gunshot, the police added.

When they went upstairs, they body Akmal’s body in a pool of blood. They also saw two suspects fleeing down the road, the SP added.

The police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.

The victim hailed from Muzaffargarh, the police said.

Three hurt in attack

Three pedestrians suffered injuries when suspects riding on a motorcycle threw some explosive material on them on Mai Kolachi Road on Sunday evening, police said.

They said that the incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Jackson police station and the injured were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

JPMC Medico-legal Officer Dr Kaleem Shaikh told Dawn that the three victims, identified as Fazal, Asghar and Jamrod, suffered injuries from pellets.

An eyewitness present at the JPMC said that the three men were walking on the main road when they were attacked. “A light explosion followed by smoke was heard at the scene,” he added.
