Passer-by, robber killed in ‘encounter’

LAHORE, March 21: A 26-year-old passer-by and a 30-year-old robbery suspect were killed and two other citizens injured during a shootout between robbers and police near Makka Chowk in Sabzazar on Wednesday.

Sabzazar police inquires showed four robbers, riding two bikes, snatched cash and valuables from Ahmad Nawaz in G-Block and fled. Four Mohafiz Force officials started chasing them. The robbers opened fire on police which was retaliated. The crossfire left a suspect and three people injured. The other suspects fled the scene.

Police shifted the injured to Jinnah Hospital where Phumman Husain of Dubanpura and the unidentified robber were pronounced dead.

Police seized a gold ring and watches from the pockets of the dead robber. The bodies were shifted for autopsy.

Saddar SP (Investigation) Hassan Sokhaira said the robbers confessed to three snatching incidents before shooting.

Aslam told the police he was returning after showing gold ornaments to a jeweller in Baghbanpura when two armed men looted him at gunpoint.

Four robbers barged in the house of Kashif in Sanda police limits and took away cash and valuables worth Rs2.8 million.

Three armed men burst into the house of Saleem in Kahna police limits and looted cash and valuables worth Rs600,000.

SHOT DEAD: A retired jail official gunned down his 35-year-old nephew following an argument over property dispute in Havalai Misran of Androon Akbari Gate early on Wednesday.

Akbari Gate police said former deputy superintendent jail Awais under the influence opened fire on his paternal nephew Romail Butt in a friends’ company.

The victim was also sitting with his uncle Awais and his friends at the time of the incident.

Awais, who was detained by the police along with murder weapon, told the police that his weapon went off accidentally.

Muhammad Illyas, who is victim’s father and a retired military accountant, told the police that he had been living in a house along with his two brothers including Awais and their families.

Police registered a case against Awais and launched investigation.

FOUND MURDERED: Naseerabad police found body of an unidentified 35-year-old man from a bin near G-Block graveyard and shifted it for autopsy on Wednesday. Police spotted injury marks on victim’s neck and other body parts.

Police earlier arrived to find the body wrapped in a blanket and concealed in a carton.

Police believed the victim, who appeared to be hailing from a well-to-do family, was kidnapped for unknown reason.
