Bank robbers drop cash after shootout with police

KARACHI, March 6: Police on Tuesday claimed to have foiled a bank robbery within the remit of the Nazimabad police station.

Police said three gunmen went into a private bank branch at Nazimabad 3 at closing time and took away a bag containing Rs1.5 million.

A duty officer of the North Nazimabad police station said that someone informed the police helpline about the robbery and a police party rushed and chased the bandits riding two motorbikes.

Police said an exchange of fire took place near the Shamim Shaheed police post. One of the bandits sustained a gunshot wound, escaped with his accomplice, but left behind the loot and motorbike.

Sindh IG Mushtaq Shah announced rewards for the police party that foiled the robbery.

The police claimed that one of the bandits was wounded during the encounter. They informed all police stations and hospitals to look out for the wounded suspect, who might turn up at a hospital for treatment.

Killed and robbed

Gunmen killed the driver of a car carrying cash of a private company, taking away the cash within the remit of the Frere police station on Tuesday.

Police said the suspect on a motorcycle took away Rs900,000 belonging to the company and killed the driver on resistance.

DSP (Frere) Zameer Ahmed Abbasi said that the company employees had withdrawn the amount meant for staff salaries from the bank branch located in the Clifton area when armed men on a motorbike chased the car.

Police said bandits intercepted the car near the Racecourse intersection on Chaudhry Khaliquzzaman Road, but when the driver of the car put up resistance, the gunmen shot and killed 45-year-old Sahib Rasool.

The police said the guard of the company tried to fire the shots but a bullet got stuck in his pistol. The guard was accompanying the driver and another employee when the incident took place.  The dead victim hailed form Buner and lived in a Korangi area.
