At least one dead as storm hits Nigerian city

LAGOS: A sudden storm has torn through Nigeria's commercial capital, killing at least one person.

The storm Monday morning brought torrential rains and incredibly strong winds through Lagos' islands. An Associated Press journalist saw the corpse of one man on Ikoyi Island, apparently killed when a fixed antennae tore away from its cement base and struck him in the head.

The storm tore down walls and trees and littered roads with debris and palm fronds.

Nigeria remains gripped by Harmattan winds, which carry sand from the Sahara Desert over Africa's most populous nation. The country's rainy season typically begins in several weeks.
