Two killed in Lyari grenade attack

KARACHI: Two persons were killed and five others, including two women, wounded in a grenade attack on an office of the Pakistan People’s Party in Lyari on Tuesday evening, police said.

Area people said that the PPP office which came under attack had earlier been used by the defunct People’s Amn Committee as its office.

The police said that four men on two motorcycles emerged near the PPP’s PS-111 office near Cheel Chowk within the remit of the Kalakot police station, one of them lobbed a hand grenade and then they rode away.

Two men sitting on chairs outside the office and five others, some of whom were present inside the office, suffered serious wounds in the attack, said SSP-South Naeem Shakih, adding that they were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where two of them were pronounced dead.

The deceased were identified as Dad Rehman, 40, and Soomar Nabi, 50.

Aqib Arif, Qasim Ghani, Naeem Sarwar, Rubina Saleem and Nazia Adnan were wounded in the explosion.

A large number of people meanwhile gathered outside the Civil Hospital Karachi.

Tension gripped the Lyari locality where commercial and business activities were suspended. More policemen were called in to control the situation.

During the past few months, Lyari has been witnessing a series of low-intensity explosions at different places. Generally, the police attributed such attacks to rival groups said to be still active in the old locality of the city.
