Gilani rejects business plan of PIA

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has refused to approve the 'business plan' submitted by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and asked its management to formulate a better strategy to overcome the organisation's financial difficulties.

Reviewing the proposed plan at a meeting on Thursday, Mr Gilani asked a committee comprising secretaries of the cabinet, finance, establishment and defence departments to chalk out final recommendations on the issue for submission to the Cabinet Committee on Restructuring.

The cabinet committee is scheduled to meet next week to discuss in detail the financial woes of PIA.

At the meeting on Thursday, the prime minister said that being a commercial organisation PIA should not only plan to overcome its difficulties but also make up the losses and provide services to the people as per their expectations.

The proposal submitted by PIA broadly dealt with corporate governance, financial restructuring, operational restructuring, marketing and fleet expansion.

Federal Ministers Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, the managing director of PIA and the chairman of Federal Board of Revenue were among those who attended the meeting.
