Two killed on road

KOHAT, Dec 16: Two people were killed and three others were seriously injured when a container ran over a car near Cheechanna on Indus Highway on Friday.

The police rescue team pulled out the bodies and the injured from the crushed car by cutting its doors.

Policemen told Dawn from the scene on telephone that a car number AFM-813 going to Bannu was run over by a container coming from the opposite direction.

One of the dead was identified as Mir Fazal Khan but the name of other could not be ascertained. The injured included Mir Imran Fazal, who belonged to Nowshera, Tasuseef Jan from Charsadda and Khalid of Bannu. The injured were shifted to KDA divisional headquarters hospital. —Correspondent

Policeman commits suicide

GILGIT, Dec 16: A police constable committed suicide here on Friday evening.

Constable Aga Shahee was deputed at animal husbandry department for security purposes. He shot himself dead with the official gun, which he sued to take home. Police said motive behind the suicide could not be known and a case was registered in this regard. —Correspondent

IDPs seek financial package

PESHAWAR, Dec 16: The elders of Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency have expressed concern over the delay in giving them the status of IDPs and urged the government to announce a comprehensive package for the tribesmen.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Friday Khyber Union (a social welfare organisation) president Haris Khan Afridi and other tribesmen said majority of people from Bara had shifted to different localities and IDPs camp at Jalozai Nowshera but they were in dire need of food and other items.

He appealed to the CJP to take notice of the mass human right violations in the tribal areas. —Bureau Report

Damaged infrastructure rebuilt

UPPER DIR, Dec 16: The district administration has rehabilitated the local micro-hydro power system and irrigation channels which had been washed away in the devastating floods last year.

It would help improve per acre yield in the area and provide electricity for household use, said a press release issued by Malakand Development Programme (MDP) here on Friday.

The district administration rehabilitated the damaged micro hydro power system in Dramdala area by constructing 546 meter long irrigation channels and fixing 3,200-meter long electricity line.

This system would not only provide electricity to more than 350 houses but also irrigate acres of agriculture land.

The district administration also rehabilitated 1,676 meters long four damaged irrigation channels and 844 meter long retaining wall in Warai area. —Correspondent

Awareness workshop

PESHAWAR, Dec 16: A two-day workshop organised by the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) for the field activists got underway here on Thursday.

The activists from across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal areas are participating in the workshop titled “Reason for Hope.”

Speaking at the inaugural session as chief guest, Younas Javed, regional director of National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (Navtec), said the public and private sector could bring about better changes in the society.

“It is a great experience sharing activity. I learnt a lot here myself. I hope all the participants have learnt a great deal here and they would apply the knowledge in their respective areas,” said Younas Javed. —Bureau Report

Cheques distributed

PESHAWAR, Dec 16: Minister for Social Welfare and Women Development Sitara Ayaz has said China had extended all possible support and assistance for the helpless, orphans and disabled children of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The minister expressed these views while talking to media representatives at a ceremony to hand over cheques given by the Chinese ambassador for orphans and helpless children held at Darul Atfal here on Friday, according to a handout.

The provincial minister said poor and helpless children were part of our society and it was our collective responsibility to look after them. She said the provincial government was taking solid steps for ensuring facilities for the needy and deserving ones.
