Child kidnapped from shrine

LAHORE, Nov 29: An unidentified woman abducted a four-month-old baby boy by dodging the victim's mother at the shrine of Bibian Pakdaman on Tuesday.

Qila Gujjar Singh SHO Qadeer Ahmad said the police obtained a CCTV footage showing the woman was taking away the child identified as Azan, son of Muhammad Azam of Sheikhupura, from the shrine.

He said the police investigation showed that Nargis, mother of Azan, got acquaintance with a middle-aged woman at Lahore General Hospital a few days ago.

Nargis' husband Azam, a father of three, is currently admitted to the hospital for the operation of his large intestine.

The suspect gave Rs500 to Nargis, a poor woman, and also bought some diapers for Azan. Nargis introduced the woman as 'Baji' to her husband and mother-in-law.

On the day of the incident, Baji asked Nargis to accompany her to Ichhra as she wanted to buy some clothes for Azan.

The women along with the baby went to Ichhra Bazaar, bought clothes worth Rs1,300 and then both left for Data Darbar after the suspect insisted that they should visit some shrine to pray for Azam. Thereafter, they visited Pir Makki shrine and finally reached Bibian Pakdaman's.

Baji asked Nargis to stay at the gate, give the baby to her and she would come back after praying for Azam and Azan. Nargis handed over her child to Baji who entered the shrine and later managed her escape.

Nargis raised an alarm after an hour and alerted the police.

The SHO said the police had registered a case and were raiding Kot Lakhpat area to trace a woman who was caught red-handed while abducting a child from LGH's emergency in March 2011.
