Mother of two girls burnt alive

RAWALPINDI, Nov 24: A mother of two, who was allegedly set alight by her husband and in-laws in her Dhoke Banaras house, died of her injuries in the Holy Family Hospital on Thursday, her relatives and police said.

“Although relations between the couple had not been good since they got married, my sister Shaista was subjected to physical torture by her husband who used to give her electric shocks and burn her body with lighted cigarettes,” Musarrat Naz, the elder sister of the victim alleged in her complaint with the police.

She said her sister used to narrate her ordeal that she had been passing through since she got married to Irfan but she continued to bear the maltreatment because of her two daughters – Ghansha Irfan 3, and Maryam Irfan, 2.

Shaista Ikram 23, wife of Mohammad Irfan, was brought to the HFH with over 90 per cent burns late Wednesday night by her husband who later disappeared from the scene.

The burn victim, who could not record her statement, died of her burns on Thursday morning.

The victim's elder sister said in her statement recorded with the R.A. Bazaar police that Mohammad Irfan had gone to Abu Dhabi some five months ago but came back on November 20. She said on his return, he started quarreling again with his wife over petty domestic issues.

“He used to threaten my sister of dire consequences,” said Musarrat. She further alleged that last night, Irfan with the help of his mother and sister dragged Shaista into the bathroom where they doused her with kerosene oil and showed her a burning match stick.

After Shaista was pronounced dead in the HFH, the police investigating into the incident registered a case against the accused though none of them have been arrested so far.—Staff Reporter
