Railways SP Jamshed Butt told a press conference that the suspect, Umar Zaid alias Zaiboon, was arrested within the remit of the Landhi police station on Nov 10.

He said that the suspect had allegedly shot a passenger, Mohammed Ramazan, onboard Fareed Express on Oct 30 when he offered resistance. The passenger later died at a hospital, he added.

The suspect had robbed the victim of his two cellphones and cash and another passenger, Mohammed Zahid, of Rs15,000 and fled from the scene after jumping off the moving train, he added.

He said that another man, Badshahzada, was absconding and added that both lived in Dawood Colony.

“A pistol, some cash and the copy of the identity card of the deceased was recovered from him,” the SP said. The suspect, presented before the media, pleaded his innocence.

The Landhi police SHO said that two accomplices of the suspect were already in jail and they all hailed from Swat.

He said that the suspect was also wanted in several other cases. A case (FIR 26/2011) was registered under Sections 392 (punishment for robbery) and 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered against the suspect.—APP
