Doctors protest against police

LAHORE, Oct 31: Scores of doctors on the call of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) held a protest demonstration at Shaikh Zayed Hospital on Monday against the police for involving three senior doctors in a murder case.

SZH doctors also went on a token strike to condemn the police excessive act of registering a murder case against their senior colleagues under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

They gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the Punjab government to withdraw the FIR registered against senior consultants and warned of a complete strike followed by rallies if their demand was not met.

Office bearers and leaders of the Medical Teachers Association, SZH, and the Young Doctors Association (YDA), Pakistan, also joined the demonstration to express solidarity with the doctors nominated in the murder case.

The agitating doctors also staged a protest rally from SZH to the Punjab University New Campus.

The doctors, carrying banners inscribed with slogans against the police, also raised slogans against protesting lawyers for putting a pressure on the police for an FIR against doctors.

Addressing the rally, the PMA office bearers demanded of the Punjab government to implement the Health Care Commission Act 2010 in its true spirit and take an action against responsible police officers for violating the laid down procedure while registering the FIR against three senior consultants without legal formalities.

Leaders and representatives of the medical associations announced they would continue their protest on Tuesday (today).
