KARACHI, Oct 31: A cattle trader was shot dead at the army-run cattle market, which is set ahead of Eid-ul-Azha annually along the Superhighway, in the early hours of Monday.

Assailants entered a stall and opened fire on the 40-year-old trader, who was apparently asleep at that time, said an official at the Sachal police station.

Abdul Ghani, son of Allah Ditta, suffered a single gunshot wound and died on the spot, the official said.

The body was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities.

Sachal SHO Azhar Ali Iqbal said that the victim hailed from Bolan district of Balochistan and had come to Karachi to sell his cattle stock.

The official said the armed suspects escaped after the shooting without taking any valuables. The victim had seven animals left in stock.

After committing the crime, the culprits mingled in a crowd, which made their escape easier, the police said, adding they suspected personal enmity as a motive behind the murder.

No case had been lodged at the Sachal police station till Monday night.

‘Bandit’ shot dead by police

A suspected bandit was killed by police in what they described as a shootout with bandits on the Superhighway on Monday.

Police said the incident took place within the remit of the Sachal police station, where the occupants of a white car were looting pedestrians at Maymar Morr.

Police claimed that a police van driving through the area spotted the suspects and challenged them, which led to a shootout.Police shot the driver of the car, who suffered a fatal gunshot wound. However, his accomplices pushed him out of the car and sped away.

Police said the dead ‘bandit’ could not be identified. His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.

Man axed to death

A young man was killed near his home in Orangi Town, police said.

The officials added that Kashi, 30, was attacked with an axe near his home in the Muslimabad area of Qasba Colony in the early hours of Monday.

The victim died on the spot and his body was later shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination, said an official of the Pirabad police station.

He quoted the family as saying that they would lodge a case following the burial.

The police said that the motive behind the murder was yet to be ascertained. They added that the victim was a drug addict.

Train robbery victim dies

The young man who had suffered gunshot wounds in the train robbery on Sunday night died at a hospital in the early hours of Monday.

Mohammad Ramzan, 30, succumbed to his wounds during operation at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, police said.

Hospital sources said that the victim had suffered two bullet wounds in the abdomen and bladder.

The victim had been working at the Dawn canteen for the past several years on a contract basis and was heading to his hometown in Bahawalpur by train when he was shot at by armed robbers.

The police said that Fareed Express was passing through the Dumba Goth area of Landhi when armed bandits started depriving passengers of their valuables at gunpoint. They fired two shots at Ramazan when he resisted to hand over his belongings to them, said the victim’s co-worker who was travelling with him.

When the Railway police personnel, who were present in the last compartment of the train, heard the shots they started locating the crime-scene.

However, by the time they reached there, the suspects had already fled.

Following his death on Monday, his co-workers took the body to the native district by road.

An FIR (26/2011) was lodged at the Landhi Railway police station on a complaint of Mohammad Zahid under Sections 392 (punishment for robbery) and 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
