FAISALABAD: Scientists from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) have developed nutrition supplement for the rearing of silk worms that will double the fiber strength of silk abstracting from silk worm.

This was revealed at a national workshop titled “Sericulture Industry in Pakistan” organized by the Department of Agri Entomology at Old Senate Hall University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) here on Friday.

Member of National Assembly (MNA) Tariq Mehmood Bajwa presided over the event and stressed the need to promote said technology by introducing it as cottage industry in rural areas in a bid to fulfill the dream of prosperity in particular and alleviation of poverty in general.

Dean Faculty of Agriculture Professor Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq said that the silk is naturally suitable to human body as it becomes part of body in heart surgery etc.

Lauding the efforts made on the part of the scientists, he termed it landmark achievement. He said that the university was committed to bringing positive changes on the horizon of agriculture by developing new things for the uplift of the sector.

He said that the sericulture industry had great potential to recognize itself as catalyst of change by creating economic activities at rural level with a lot of job providing opportunities.

Dr. Khurram Zia said that the country could gain a lot in the field of fiber and technology. He said that the new technique adopted by the farming community would create ample opportunities of employment besides giving huge financial benefits.

Dr. Khurram claimed that sericulture needs very minor investment while it can be made a permanent source of income for all those families who can easily become experts and operate this business at their houses and banks of their farms.

Prof Dr Anjum Sohail, Professor Dr Sohail Ahmad, Dr Dildar Gogi, Ghulam Sabir and Faqeer Nusrat Husain also spoke on the occasion.
