‘Punjab leads in HR violations’

ISLAMABD, Oct 13: As many as 2,587 rape and 6,242 murder cases were reported from Punjab in 2010 thus placing the province at the top of Human Rights (HR) violation list of the provinces.

This was said by Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar on Thursday.Responding in National Assembly to a calling attention notice he said not a single case of rape was reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) last year, however the figure stood at 33 in Balochistan and 290 in Sindh.Similarly, he said that as many as 6,242 cases of murder were reported from Punjab, 3,290 from Sindh, 2,501 from Punjab and 548 from Balochistan.

He told the House that the other cases of HR violation reported from Punjab were indiscriminately more than the figure reported from other provinces thus showing the lack of commitment of the provincial government in curbing the HR violations. He said that the federal government took numerous steps to curb the HR violation especially against the women and children, including setting up of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Centres to protect the rights of women. — APP
