KARACHI, Oct 8: Sunni Tehrik leader Shahid Ghauri and seven other party men were remanded in police custody on Saturday for three days for interrogation in an arson case by the administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts in Karachi, Justice Maqbool Baqar of the Sindh High Court.

They were arrested on Friday night for resorting to violent activities and creating a law and order situation in the city.

The case (FIR 366/2022) was registered by at the Mominabad police station under Sections 426 (punishment for mischief) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Justice Baqar directed the investigation officer to get the identification parade of the suspects before a judicial magistrate on Oct 10. The judge, however, directed the police not to handcuff the ST leader.

Missing persons’ caseThe SHC on Friday issued a notice to the director-general of the Rangers, provincial and city police chiefs and other police officials in two separate but identical petitions seeking whereabouts of two young men who were allegedly whisked away by plain-clothes law enforcers in Korangi.

Deen Muhammad, a resident of Korangi No 4, submitted in his petition that his son, Aqeel Ahmed, was going to meet one of his friends in the neighbourhood on Oct 2 at around 7pm when he was intercepted by plain-clothes policemen and Rangers personnel in H Area.

He said the law-enforcement personnel, riding in a private vehicle, took away his son and since then his whereabouts were not known.

The petitioner, represented by Advocate Hanif Chotani, impleaded the home secretary, director-general of Rangers, inspector general of police, city police chief, the officer in charge of the Special Investigation Unit, SP of Korangi and SHO of the Korangi police station as respondents.

He stated that he approached the area police to find out about his son’s whereabouts, but to no avail. He said the police also refused to lodge an FIR against the kidnappers of his son and instead humiliated him at the police station.

The petitioner prayed to the court to order the respondents to produce the detainee in court with the details of the case, if any, against him.

He also requested the court to order the registration of an FIR against the kidnappers of his son.

Another petitioner, Safia Aman, submitted in her petition that her husband was on his way to visit some relatives in the locality when at around 8pm he was arrested by plain-clothes policemen and Rangers personnel.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam issued notices to the respondents, deputy attorney general and advocate general.

The hearing was put off to a date to be fixed by the court’s office.
