Police official shot dead

KARACHI, Sept 25: Assailants shot dead a policeman on Jahangir Road on Sunday evening, police said.

They said 35-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector Safeer Butt was passing through Baloch Para on Jahangir Road on his motorcycle when unknown assailants, also riding a two-wheeler, fired at him and escaped.

The ASI, who was in plain clothes, sustained bullet wounds close to his chest. He was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A duty officer at the Jamshed Quarters police station said the slain policeman had been posted at the police station since 2007.

The motive behind the killing could not be immediately ascertained.

‘Bandits’ beaten up

Two suspected bandits were beaten up by people after they were allegedly caught trying to commit a robbery in the limits of the Soldier Bazaar police station on Sunday night.

Police said people of the area caught the two suspects, later identified as Zeeshan and Akash, and gave them a severe hiding before police intervened.

The two suspects were shifted to the Civil Hospital for treatment by the police before an FIR could be registered, said a duty officer of the Soldier Bazaar police station.
