Two arrested over fraudulent marriage

MANSEHRA, Sept 23: Police here on Friday arrested a woman for marrying people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab before fleeing with gold and other valuables.

Her accomplice was also taken into custody.

Police said the arrests were made after a local cleric, Qudratullah Qadri, told them that he had been engaged for solemnising a 'highly dubious' marriage of a local, Mohammad Irfan, with a non-local woman.

The information led to a raid by policemen headed by SHO city police station Khursheed Tanoli on a Batdarian house, where Mohammad Qaisar of Multan and the woman were present. The two were arrested.

Tanoli told Dawn that Qaisar had 'sold' the woman to Irfan for Rs60,000 for marriage. He said the two were involved in fooling and looting people. The SHO said the woman had confessed to contracting 10 marriages before fleeing with gold and other valuables in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

MURDER: Unidentified gunmen killed an elderly man at Mansehra bus station on Friday, police said.

Hazrat Wali, 70, was gunned down when he was boarding an Allai-bound bus. The assailants fled after confirming the death. Police handed over the body after its autopsy at King Abdullah Hospital. They also registered a murder case and began inquiry into the killing.—Correspondent
