UET paper leak Inquiry report submitted to Punjab government

LAHORE, Sept 14: The Anti-Corruption Department has said that University of Engineering and Technology's lab attendant Muhammad Mubeen copied varsity's entrance test question paper during assembling and stapling of the paper.

In its report submitted to the Punjab government, the department said the paper was sold to a number of people, including students and teachers, against hundreds of thousands of rupees.

The case was initially registered with Gujjarpura police, which arrested UET naib qasid Muhammad Anees, supervisor Muhammad Ashraf and internet café owner Syed Shujauddin Zaidi. Later, the anti-corruption department arrested Asif Naseer, Ahsan Murtaza, Farooq Ali, Usman Ahmad and Hafiz Abu Bakar and they 'confessed' that they received the entrance test paper and gave its copies to candidates.

The department seized Rs5,000 and the computer, which was used to send e-mails, from Anees. Copies of question paper were also seized from Muhammad Ashraf.

Punjab College, Gujranwala, teachers Rehan Khan and Adeel Islam 'admitted' that they acquired copies of the paper and sold these to students. The department got record of phone calls and SMSes and found that all accused were in contact with each other. The department said five UET professors could be questioned about the paper leak. There names are Prof Dr Saleem Abid Tabbasum, Prof Dr Nadeem Ahmad Mufti, Prof Dr Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, associate professor Dr Naveed Ramzan and associate professor Dr Muhammad Shuaif.

However, investigators found that Mubeen gave the question paper to Shahid Rasheed, who sold it to student Raja Faizan for Rs750,000. Faizan sold the paper to Khizer Hayat and Aqib Zulfiqar for Rs60,000. Khizer sold the paper to Saad-ul-Hasan and Nasir Talib for Rs40,000. These two students sold the paper to Atif Butt for Rs40,000.

Rana Farooq sold the paper to Ahsan Murtaza for Rs250,000, who sold the paper to Prof Rehan for Rs400,000. He gave the paper to his colleague Adeel Islam, who sold it to Hafiz Usama for Rs200,000. He also sold some copies to other students for Rs20,000 and Rs30,000 each. Hafiz Usama paid Rs200,000 to Adeel through a cheque and he gave a cheque of Rs200,000 to Ahsan Murtaza.

The entrance test question paper leaked on July 24 and the case was registered on July 27.
