Marriage dispute claims life

ATTOCK, Sept 4: A youth was killed and a woman seriously injured over a marriage dispute in a village here.

Behram Khan, a resident of Haveli village, reported to the Jand police on Sunday that his son Sher Ahmed wanted to marry a girl in the village but her parents refused the proposal saying she had already been engaged.

He said when his son was returning home along with a relative woman; Mujahid and Mohammad Adnan from the girl’s family allegedly attacked them. As a result, his son died on the spot while the woman sustained serious injuries. The police shifted the body and the injured to the tehsil headquarters hospital Jand and are investigating the case.

Meanwhile, thieves stole Rs90,000 and jewellery from the house of Arshad Mehmood in Muhallah Girls High School Fatehjang. Three armed men also looted cash, golden ornaments and other valuables from the house of Fazal Hussain in Jhalu village. — Correspondent

Youth killed on road

TAXILA, Sept 4:  A youth was killed and two others were injured while doing wheelie on Taxila-Khanpur road on Sunday.

Police said Nazakat Ali, Aqib Mehmood and Sheeraz Ali were wheeling on their motorcycles when they collided with a speedy dumper coming from the opposite direction.

As a result, Sheeraz died on the spot while Nazakat and Aqib received injuries and were taken to POF hospital in Wah Cantt. — Correspondent

Man commits suicide

CHAKWAL, Sept 4: A young man committed suicide by shooting himself in Jaithal village in the limit of Dhudial police station. The sources said on Sunday that Asad Mehmood, 22, had a quarrel with his parents over some domestic issue. Afterwards, he went into his room and shot himself with a gun. He was rushed to the DHQ hospital from where he was referred to Rawalpindi due to his critical condition. However, he succumbed to his injury on the way. —Correspondent

GUJAR KHAN, Sept 4: A man was shot dead and two other persons were injured when their opponents opened fire on them during a funeral procession in the Kerala village of Jatly police on Sunday.

Ameer Hussain reported to the police that he along with Mohammad Akram was returning home after participating in a funeral procession in Karala village when Khalid and Tariq allegedly attacked them.

As a result, Akram died on the spot while two passersby, Sher Khan and Abdul Rehman, sustained injuries.

According to the police, Tariq’s brother Tahir Mehmood was shot dead in July and the former suspected that Akram was involved in the killing of his brother.— Correspondent

Electrocuted

CHAKWAL, Sept 4: A man was electrocuted as he was displaying a banner on an electricity pole, police said on Sunday.

Tanveer Hussain, a resident of Mohalla Ghaosia went to Khanpur village for displaying banners in connection with an Urs. He received a severe electricity shock when he climbed up a pole to hang the banner. — Correspondent

11 gamblers arrested

ATTOCK, Sept 4: As many as 11 gamblers were arrested by the local police in a surprise raid at a gambling den, the sources said on Sunday. The police also recovered stake amount and mobile phones from their possession. The raiding party led by SHO Inspector IsrarSatti conducted a raid at a gambling den in ‘H’ block of the city and arrested 11 alleged gamblers including Shujhat Gillani, Mohammad Safdar, Mohammad Rustam, Zaman Ahmed, Shakoor Ahmed, Abdul Nazar, Muhammad Fiaz, Hafeez ullah, Irshad Mehmood, Ahmed Khan and Safdar Khan and also recovered Rs26,475 stake money and seven mobile phones from their possession. The city police registered a case and started investigation. — Correspondent

BISP lauded

GUJAR KHAN, Sept 4: Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has won global acclaim as an ideal plan for the social development and for alleviation of the downtrodden masses.

BISP Chairperson Farzana Raja said this while addressing a large gathering here on Sunday. She said that it was a step to materialise the dreams of Shaheed Zuilfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto to address the problems of the poor people. She said that the BISP would be extended to provide financial assistance to the brilliant students belonging to the poor families.

She said the provision of vocation training, self employment through private business, health insurance and medical treatment for the destitute had already been included in the plans of the BISP. She said that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani were taking keen interest in implementing the manifesto of the PPP by providing relief at the door steps of the poor masses. —Correspondent
