‘22 lawyers killed across province’

KARACHI, Sept 3: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan said on Saturday that the heirs of the lawyers who fell victim to terror attacks would be given compensation by the government.

He was talking to a delegation of the Karachi Bar Association led by its president Mohammad Aqil and general secretary Haider Imam Rizvi at the Governor’s House.

Former provincial education minister retired Justice Khalid Z. Kazi and former advocate general Dr Farogh Naseem were alsopresent there.

The governor was informed that 22 lawyers had been killed across the province by terrorists and 14 of them belonged to the Karachi Bar Association.

The governor said that lawyers were important pillars of the legal fraternity and lauded their role in the struggle for the supremacy of law and the constitution.

He suggested that an endowment fund should be set up for lawyers welfare and assured the delegation that after its establishment the government would also contribute to it, besides ensuring an annual grant.

The governor condemned those elements that were threatening lawyers and directed the provincial home secretary and the Sindh IG to take necessary measures in this regard.

He also directed that a committee comprising representatives of the home department, the police and the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee be formed to ensure quick response to law and order issues.

Matters concerning housing of lawyers and other related matters also came up for discussion.
