Parcel bomb delivered to scientist

KARACHI, Aug 26: The police on Friday found a hand-grenade in a parcel purported to be sent from the interior of Sindh to a local scientist at his home in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, officials said.

They said the residents of a home in Gulistan-i-Jauhar called the area police after they had suspicions about the contents of the parcel they had received in the evening. After examining the parcel, the police called in the bomb disposal unit that found a hand-grenade hidden in vegetables.

“The parcel weighed some 10 kilograms,” said SP Waqar Mullan of Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town. “It was delivered by a private individual and not by any courier service to the home of a scientist associated with the PCSIR (Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research).” The parcel was received by the scientist’s father in the evening and he waited for his son to return home before opening it, he said. He said the scientist returned late in the night, found the parcel suspicious and called the police.

“The parcel was sent from Sanghar. It carried a Russian-made hand-grenade. An FIR (523/2011) under Sections ¾ of the Explosive Act and 7 of the Anti-terrorism Act has been registered against unknown suspects,” added the SP.
